MATE 4145 practice

Homework will be due weekly. How I mark it: short quiz will be given at random times (on average, weekly). It often consists of two or three problems, at least one of which corresponds to one of the assigned exercises. On that quiz problem, the homework solution will help improve the mark, unless there is clearly no relation between the two solutions. Quiz will usually bear on the last two homework sets handed in, and any material at least as recent covered in class. Often one problem will correspond to an example, or a step of proof done in class. This is an incentive to take notes and study them.
On homework, present your work neatly. Use pencil. Problems will be assigned from the text, to be numbered according to the order of their posting, not according to the numbering in the book. Work which is sloppy or evidently rushed will not be graded.
(Added 1/9) To repeat: problems are to be numbered according to how they are posted, since problems from different sections have the same number in the text. Indicate the corresponding problem number in the text between parentheses. For example, referring to hw 2: (problem numbers are underlined, you can circle them instead):

19 (pb 11 of sec 3.1)
20 (pb 13 of sec 3.1)
30 (pb 11 of sec 3.3)
31 (pb 13 of sec 3.3)
