MATE 3032 practice
Assigned exercises.
Homework will be due on Wednesday of each week, unless otherwise
indicated. How I mark it: short quiz will be given at random times (on
average, weekly). It often consists of two or three problems, at least
one of which corresponds to one of the assigned exercises. On that
problem, I will mark the better of the two solutions from quiz or
homework. (Often another problem will replicate an example done in
class, which is an incentive to take notes and study them).
(25/8) I notice that extensive use is made of the solutions
manual. Starting with homework set 2, change the above rule as
follows:
(1) In order to earn credit on a homework problem, you have to vary
somehow from the solution shown in the manual. This may mean
providing additional figures, or explaining a particular step
(say, showing how to find the intersection of two curves), or
elaborating on the given explanations, or following the style
shown in class for performing the intermediate computations (e.g.,
integrals). In other words, show originality. Also, work which is
sloppy or evidently rushed will not be graded.
(2) On that quiz problem, I will take the average of the marks of quiz
and homework (if it improves on quiz), unless there is clearly no
relation between your two solutions. Quiz will usually bear on the
last two homework sets handed in, and other material covered in
class.
(3) On homework, present your work neatly, and write your name, course,
section, and homework number. Use pencil.
(4) Adequate preparation for the tests consists in working out most of
the problems in the syllabus. You will note that there are on
average three times as many as assigned for homework. Conclude as
to how much time per week you should be spending in this course.
My suggestion is: at least eight hours.
